Learning to Love and Trust Yourself While Facing Your Future

Going into college is a huge step in your life, and trying to gain confidence in yourself and the future that you are working for can be extremely hard! You can feel your passion falter and start to fade during those long nights, and sometimes you start to wonder if you really are on the right path for yourself. I’m here to tell you that you’ll be fine! STOP WORRYING!

One thing I’ve noticed about this generation, in particular, is our lack of confidence in ourselves. I see it all the time, where people my age put themselves down for the amazing work that they’ve done. We do incredible things but we sell ourselves short and apologize for our masterpieces in fear that we’ll be called selfish or narcissistic. STOP DOING THAT! If you’ve created something amazing, you have the right to own it and pump yourself up!

Older people have no problem owning up to their own work, so why do we? I suppose it could have something to do with the fact that from a young age we have been torn apart about every single thing we have done. For as long as I can remember, Millenials and gen z have been eaten alive for the mere fact that we were born during a specific time period; the technological age.  We have grown up hearing about “how entitled we are” therefore, we have disassociated ourselves with anything that has to do with self-pride and acceptance! I’m here to tell you to stop doing that!

You have every right to be proud of a project that you’ve worked hard on! Stop handing things in and saying “it’s not that great though.” A professor of mine told me that saying that is essentially the same thing as saying, “Hey, my hand smells… sniff it!” And she’s completely right! If you aren’t proud of what you are showing other people, then why on earth would they want to take a look at it and possibly hire you?

The moral of the story is, you are talented, and you deserve to brag about the work you’ve done! Walk into an interview with only work you are proud of, and totally rock it! And if you don’t have anything that you’re proud of, then pick up a pencil and start working because there’s plenty of things within you to be proud of! Update the portfolio and walk in there prepared to kick some major butt!
